Good Reasons for Studying Materials Science and Business Administration
Many tasks in industry, public authorities and management consultancies, but also in research institutions, contain technical and economic issues that are difficult to handle by pure engineers or pure economists alone. This is the ideal field of application for industrial engineers, who combine the world of technology with that of business. Due to their extensive training, however, they should also be able to work in depth in any individual discipline. In the Industrial Engineering and Materials Science program, students gain the fundamental knowledge of the subjects in engineering and economics that is necessary for professional practice. They develop the ability to independently apply scientific methods and knowledge. The clear goal of this degree program is project management. To achieve this, the prospective engineers will not only be trained technically, as is the case in pure engineering sciences, but will also be able to combine skills in the two fields, engineering and economics. They will be at home in both worlds and ensure comprehensible communication between them.
Graduates of the Materials Science and Business Administration program can be found in a wide range of industries and in almost all technical and economic functional areas and company management positions, in particular due to their inte
- Set and prioritize goals,
- plan the approach and processes,
- make trade-offs and decisions,
- organizing processes,

- and control work results.
The target and employment level is middle and upper management.
The most important fields of activity of industrial engineers are with exemplary activities in each case:
- Research, development: definition of future fields of work, profitability calculations, cost-optimized development,
- Organization: development of organizational forms,
- Logistics/materials management/purchasing: planning and realization of procurement programs (quantity, timing, price),
- Manufacturing, production: determination of cost-optimal manufacturing concepts,
- Marketing, sales: market research, market analyses, sale of technically demanding (investment) goods, development of system solutions, product management,
- Accounting, Controlling: analysis of projects for profitability.
As a starting salary, you can expect €50,000 and more per year, depending on the region.
