Topic: Eco-friendly Marine Coatings for Aquaculture Nets

Background:

Marine hulls and other man-made surfaces exposed to seawater are inevitably affected by the accumulation of various marine organisms, the so-called biofouling. This leads to great problems, especially in shipping and aquaculture. For example, the biofouling on aquaculture nets can greatly reduce the supply of oxygen and nutrients inside the nets, which has a negative impact on the development of the fish. The mechanical strain due to the extra weight and increased drag can cause damage to the nets that they tear and release the farmed fish into the ocean. In addition to the economic loss for fish farming, many countries like Norway impose high fines for this. asd

The common methods to reduce the influence of the biofouling on aquaculture are in-situ cleaning and copper/biocide-based antifouling coating. The goal of our ‘CleaNet’ project is to develop an eco-friendly marine coating with fouling-release and long-term-stable properties for aquaculture.
