Client Settings

Use these settings for standalone Emailclients like Mozilla Thunderbird, Microsoft Outlook etc.

  • Mail address: <your loginname>@tf.uni-kiel.de, i.e. abc@tf.uni-kiel.de
  • User name: <your loginname>, z.B. abc
  • Server for incoming mail:
    • Servertype IMAP
    • Servername mailhost.tf.uni-kiel.de
    • Port 993, connection type: SSL
  • Server for outgoing mail (within the Faculty):
    • Servertype SMTP
    • Servername mailhost.tf.uni-kiel.de
    • Port 25
  • Server for outgoing mail (outside the faculty):
    • Servertype SMTP
    • Servername mailhost.tf.uni-kiel.de
    • Port 587, autentication necessary, SSL over STARTTLS. More information see below!

Important hint for using Thunderbird

  • Per default, Thunderbird switches on Message Synchronizing. This must be switched off, because it slows down the network connection and may cause other trouble. Go to "Tools -> Account settings -> Synchronization and storage" and uncheck Message Synchronizing. Screenshot.
    • If emails have already been synchronized, it is advisable to delete them. With Thunderbird closed, delete all data in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\thunderbird\profiles\<profile_directory>\imapmail\mailhost.tf.uni-kiel.de. Then restart Thunderbird. After restart wait a while for all Emails to be indexed again.
    • The directory c:\}users\<username>\AppData may be hidden. You can enter it by giving in the path in the Windows Explorer.
  • If the Thunderbird configuration is no longer confirmed, this is often due to an automatic Thunderbird update that resulted in a new, unconfigured user profile. To get the old user profile back, enter "thunderbird.exe -ProfileManager" (without quotation marks) at the command prompt. This shows the available profiles. Choose the right one.
  • There are a variety of add-ons for Thunderbird (under "Extras / Add-ons and Themes") to expand its capabilities. For example, the “Shrunked Image Resizer” add-on, which can reduce the size of images to be sent, is popular. Simply search for “Shrunked Image Resizer” and add it to Thunderbird.

Creating New Mailfolders

If you create new mail folders, you should place them under the structure of mailhost.tf.uni-kiel.de resp. <your username>@tf.uni-kiel.de. Then you can access them worldwide, no matter, what email program you are using.
