Special FAQ

More specific questions about the use of computer ressources at the faculty. All these questions are a result of working with the computer equipment at the Faculty of Engineering.

0. I can not connect to a group share (samba share) in windows explorer.

Please enter \\<Group-Servername>.tf.uni-kiel.de into the address bar first. If username and password are asked, make sure to set a tf\ (the letters tf followed by a backslash) bevor the username, so as tf\stu123456. In rare cases, this does not work on Windows 10. Then, try to enter the IP address of the server into the address bar. You get the IP address by entering nslookup <servername>.tf.uni-kiel.de in a cmd window. Subsequently, in the windows explorer address bar, type \\134.245.24x.xxx, where x must be replaced accordingly.

1. Logging in and out always takes so long. How can you reduce it?

If you work on a computer with your TF account (and not a local account, which applies only to the computer), the locally located user profile is compared with the network located profile at logon and logoff. If there are too many files available (for example, on the desktop, under My Documents, or by default turned on synchronization for Thunderbird), this adjustment mechanism may take many minutes. If necessary, you can turn off this balance entirely. Link.

2. I can not save files on U: any more. But the Windows Explorer still shows sooo much free disk space. What's going on there?

The space is limited for each user account. Unfortunately, the Windows Explorer shows this incorrectly. You may deleteunused data in your Windows profile (both U: and on C: required). Otherwise: Please call the IT Group to increase the storage space.

3. I get an error message at logon / logout. What shall I do?

Reading the message and telling it the IT Group. Usually it comes from an incorrect storing of your windows profile. You may be over quota or there are special letters in filenames coming from arabian or chinese symbols that trouble the file storing process.

4. How can I access my network stored data from outside the faculty / by WLAN?

The magic word is "Remote Login". Link

5. I need Software xyz on the faculty servers. Can you please install it?

If there is a reasonable need for the software we can talk about it. Please come to our office.

6. My usb stick does not work on the thinclients.

This is a common problem. Please try a different thinclient or a PC like, i.e., in the library.

7. Where can I burn CDs / DVDs?

You can use the scanner PC in the library for that.

8. I lost data. How can it be restored?

If the data was stored on a network drive over night, we can restore it from our backup system if the data is not older than 30 working days. For local hard disks or portable media we may have the software to restore files that can not be seen in the file manager and can not be undeleted by Microsoft means.

9. How can I change the display language on the Windows Remote Desktop Servers?

Read these instructions.

10. My shortcuts on the desktop disappear constantly. What can I do so that they remain?

Microsoft often deletes desktop shortcuts that were recognized as "defective". There are two workarounds to solve this: Microsoft's Support Website.
