Chair of Power Electronics

Reunion of former scientific staff members (Prof. Fuchs)

Sep 27, 2023

Reunion of former scientific staff members (Prof. Fuchs) at the Chair of Power Electronics at the Christian-Albrechts-University

It was a great pleasure for 20 former scientific staff members of the chair to meet on September 23 at the chair. They worked between 1996 and 2018 at the chair, supervised by Professor Fuchs, most of them made there PhD. Professor Fuchs kept the network to them after their work at the chair. They work now as specialists or in leading positions in the industry. It was interesting for them to meet again and exchange technical information about the work. The meeting started with round table and exchange of information of each one, continued with a laboratory tour at the chair, where especially the medium voltage laboratory left a great impression to them, and continued with person to person discussions and a buffet in a restaurant near Kiel.

This year's reunion of former scientific team members showed once again how much these engineers have embraced jobs in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg, strengthening industry in the north. Of the 31 (total number) technically highly skilled engineers who worked under Professor Fuchs as scientific team members at the Chair, 16 (52 %) are employed in Schleswig-Holstein and 6 (19 %) in the neighboring northern German states and in southern Denmark. They work as technical specialists and also as technical managers. Among the companies are Anschütz, Danfoss, Jungheinrich, Nordex, Semikron-Danfoss, Still, Thales, Vossloh. This is a clear indication of how the work of this chair strengthens the industry in Schleswig-Holstein and northern Germany. It is believed that among the graduates with master's degrees, the percentage of those working in northern Germany is even higher. Power electronics is a key component in industry and is also indispensable, for example, for the further expansion of renewable energy production.

Research

  • Our research is focused on the design of high efficient and reliable PWM-based power converter architectures (single-cell, multi-cell, multilevel), their modelling and control to exploit commercial as well as new power semiconductor devices with minimum over design.
We develop controllers for electric drives and we are particularly skilled in the integration of renewable energy systems into the electric grid.
