Reunion of former scientific staff members (Prof. Fuchs)
Sep 27, 2023
Reunion of former scientific staff members (Prof. Fuchs) at the Chair of Power Electronics at the Christian-Albrechts-University
It was a great pleasure for 20 former scientific staff members of the chair to meet on September 23 at the chair. They worked between 1996 and 2018 at the chair, supervised by Professor Fuchs, most of them made there PhD. Professor Fuchs kept the network to them after their work at the chair. They work now as specialists or in leading positions in the industry. It was interesting for them to meet again and exchange technical information about the work. The meeting started with round table and exchange of information of each one, continued with a laboratory tour at the chair, where especially the medium voltage laboratory left a great impression to them, and continued with person to person discussions and a buffet in a restaurant near Kiel.
This year's reunion of former scientific team members showed once again how much these engineers have embraced jobs in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg, strengthening industry in the north. Of the 31 (total number) technically highly skilled engineers who worked under Professor Fuchs as scientific team members at the Chair, 16 (52 %) are employed in Schleswig-Holstein and 6 (19 %) in the neighboring northern German states and in southern Denmark. They work as technical specialists and also as technical managers. Among the companies are Anschütz, Danfoss, Jungheinrich, Nordex, Semikron-Danfoss, Still, Thales, Vossloh. This is a clear indication of how the work of this chair strengthens the industry in Schleswig-Holstein and northern Germany. It is believed that among the graduates with master's degrees, the percentage of those working in northern Germany is even higher. Power electronics is a key component in industry and is also indispensable, for example, for the further expansion of renewable energy production.

Transformerstation for medium-voltage lab delivered
Aug 08, 2019
On the 8th of August, the Power Electronics Chair celebrated another milestone in the medium-voltage laboratory construction project.
The external power station was delivered by heavy transport and placed on the foundation. It includes a room with three medium-voltage switchgear, a room with a 10kV / 10kV isolation transformer (100kVA) and a room with a 10kV / 0.4kV transformer. This was preceded by elaborate earthworks to prepare the loamy surface for the high load. Since it had to wait for a release of the ordnance clearance service and the earthworks were accompanied by a combat probe, the construction project was delayed by several months.
The next steps will be follow-up works and connection works of the transformer station.
Next week, a recooler will be placed on the roof of the station and integrated into the prepared cooling system. Then another 6 weeks are planned for connection work, followed by another 2 weeks of work for programming and acceptance.
In the best case, a transfer of the medium-voltage laboratory would therefore be realistic in the beginning / middle of October.
Bericht zu den “Power Girls & Power Boys Tagen 2019”
Jul 02, 2019

Abstract: Electric machine design paradigms have been dramatically changed by the need to meet the demands for minimizing losses and smooth torque control during driving cycles with widely vary loads and speeds. Simultaneously, new drive control paradigms systematically out-perform industry standard field oriented control (FOC) and simultaneously solve several classical problems with FOC. In addition, the internet of things is opening expansive opportunities for motor drives. This presentation with focus on these disruptive changes in the paradigms for electric machines and electrical drives and explore the opportunities for innovation that these technologies provide.

Sonderkolloquium, Prof. Concari, University of Parma - "Fault Diagnosis of Electrical Machines"
Feb 07, 2017
When & Where - 21.02.2017 ,15:00 - 16:30, Technische Fakultät, Kaiserstr. 2, Kiel, Raum: "Aquarium", Geb. D
Abstract: The fault diagnosis of electrical machines has been the subject of intensive research for several decades. Being able to detect or predict incipient faults before they impair the ability of the machines to function properly is a very welcome feature in industrial environments, where unscheduled downtime can cause production and financial loss.
Electrical machine faults include electrical stator faults, electrical rotor faults, eccentricity, bearing faults. Diagnostic techniques for the detection of such faults in electrical machines are reviewed, and their effectivity is assessed in different operating conditions, including closed-loop inverter-fed operation. Furthermore, the impact of wide-bandgap devices is discussed and prognostic techniques are reviewed, with particular focus on aerospace applications.
Kolloquiumsvortrag, Prof. Tamas Kerekes - "Design of residential Photovoltaic systems – a guideline"
Feb 13, 2017
When & Where : 13.02.2016 , 17:15 - 18:45 , Technische Fakultät, Institut für Elektrotechnik und Informationstechnik, Kaiserstr. 2, Kiel, Raum: "Aquarium", Geb. D
Abstract: Photovoltaic technology continues to increase its share in the global energy market, with an exceptionally fast growth in the last few decades reaching a cumulative capacity of 227 GW by the end of 2015, with a predicted extra 50GW of new installations for 2016. Residential PV systems are a key element in the success story of PV rooftop installations and large utility scale plants share about 50% of new installations today. ENTSO_E forecasts that by 2025 European power generation will have over 50% renewable, where solar will be expected to have a major role. If we combine the solar increase with even more wind penetration, then this will require a much more flexible system in order to make the best use of renewable energy sources when they are available. By making the best use of cheap renewable electricity when it is available, storage can make the energy system more cost-effective. By adapting to demand and limiting the possibility of peak pricing, storage will also have a balancing effect on prices throughout the day. If solar is combined with storage then this will act as a bridging technology between the electricity, heating and cooling as well as transport sectors. Besides the rapidly developing battery storage capacity, the electrification of the transport sector and the use of electricity for heat purposes allow for an integrated approach of the energy system. This will provide new opportunities for European consumers and businesses, whilst potentially offering a variety of services to grid operators.

Nachwuchstalente mit Power
Jul 29, 2016
