Semester abroad
Tips
The most important thing when planning studies abroad is to start planning early, so that the necessary applications can be submitted on time without rushing. Experience tells us that the planning for a foreign study trip should start one year before the trip. A visit to the corresponding informational meeting at the International Center at Kiel University (held once a semester) is always a good idea! Helpful tips are available on all sorts of topics and consultation appointments can be made.
Organizing studies abroad through ERASMUS is simpler and less complex than trying to apply for admission without ERASMUS, since a professor always plays a type of mediating role in the ERASMUS programme. In addition, there are generally no tuition fees to be paid at the host university and there is financial support. However, that doesn't mean that the project will run by itself. In general, a planning period of one year is to be expected when you would like to study at a university abroad.

Erasmus+
Erasmus+ is the EU’s programme for education, training, youth and sport. It started on 1 January 2014 and replaces the Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP), JUGEND IN AKTION as well as the international EU university programmes.
The programme has been supplied with 14.7 billion Euros until the end of its duration. On top of this, another 1.68 billion Euros has been made available from the budgets for EU foreign trade for financing activities with third countries / partner countries ("Heading 4").
The current generation of EU education programmes therefore opens up new perspectives for the years from 2014 to 2020, for shaping mobility and European and international cooperation in education. In order to achieve the Europe 2020 objectives, the Commission has published a new agenda for modernising Europe’s university systems.
ERASMUS+ gives students the opportunity to spend up to 12 months abroad, during any phase of their degree programme (Bachelor, Master, PhD). In addition to study trips, work experience placements of over 2 months are also funded.

Industry internship
An internship abroad in a later semester (for example in the sixth semester) has the advantage that it is generally possible to continue the degree programme in Kiel without any interruption. Internships abroad can also be handled through the organisation IAESTE.
Information
As with studies abroad, your best information sources for internships abroad are also Kiel University’s International Center and the professors at the Faculty of Engineering. For example, the International Center holds informational meetings every 2 weeks during lecture periods on the topic of internships abroad. However, since this information applies to all students, the professors at the Faculty of Engineering can add some subject-specific information, sometimes even naming specific companies they have contact with and/or with which students of the Faculty of Engineering have already completed internships. The International Center can also provide information about options for financial support.
Tips on doing internships abroad
The search for companies where you can do an internship abroad requires a great deal of initiative on your part. There are various informational publications that can be used to help your selection. The professors at the Faculty of Engineering will support you, as far as possible, in your search for companies. As was already mentioned in the context of studies abroad, starting to plan early is also important when planning an internship abroad.
