Doctoral examination procedure
After reviewing the complete application documents, admission is made by the Dean. First and second reviewers will be asked to prepare their reviews within 6 weeks. A third expert opinion may be required.
Once all reviews have been submitted to the Dean's Office, the reviews and dissertation are displayed for one week during the lecture period and for three weeks during the lecture-free period in the Dean's Office for inspection by the supervisors.
The Dean's Office requests a date for the disputation, which must be agreed with the members of the Examination Board, and invites the Examination Board and the candidate to the disputation and publicizes it throughout the University.
Disputations are open to the university public. Upon justified request, the Doctoral Committee may allow a disputation in a closed session.
Conduct of the disputation section 16 (1 – 9)
The disputation is made up of two sections that are held back-to-back:
1. a presentation by the candidate about the dissertation, lasting around 30 minutes, as well as
2. a discussion following immediately on from this between the candidate and the Examination Committee on the dissertation topic and related subject areas, lasting between 45 and 60 minutes.
Immediately after the disputation, a closed final session of the examination committee shall take place.
At the end of the defense, the examination committee will determine whether the dissertation is ready for publication. If it has not been designated as ready for printing, it will only be determined by the dean after the first assessor has confirmed in writing that the thesis is ready for printing after the required changes have been made.
Once the disputation has been completed, you can view the reviews in the Dean's Office.
Publication of the dissertation section 20 (1 – 3)
As a rule, the dissertation recognized as ready for publication should be delivered to the faculty within one year of the disputation at the latest and made accessible to the academic public in an appropriate manner. This requirement is fulfilled if the candidate delivers the copy required for the examination files to the Dean's Office free of charge and provides confirmation from the University Library that the requirements for publication have been met:
- publication in generally accessible electronic media via the University Library;
- four copies if the essential parts of the thesis are published in a journal, e.g. in the case of cumulative dissertations or;
- two copies if a commercial publisher is responsible for distribution via the book trade and a minimum print run of 150 copies can be proven or
- forty copies in printed or photocopied form for the purpose of distribution;
- two copies in printed form for publication as a "book on demand".
Prior to publication in electronic form, the written consent of the supervisor must be obtained. If electronic publication is not possible for copyright or patent reasons, a summary should be published electronically first. After two years, the entire thesis should be published.

Doctoral certificate section 21 (1 – 3)

In non-consensual cases, the respective Doctoral Degree Committee decides on how to proceed on application, after both parties have been heard. The Doctoral Degree Committee must be informed of the mutual termination, citing corresponding grounds. If you terminate the doctoral procedure prematurely, please inform the Dean's Office in writing, stating the reason.
