Multiphase Induction Motor Drives

Multiphase drives have recently attracted the attention of researchers and application engineers based on their potential advantages over the classical three-phase drives. The larger number of phases raises some interesting possibilities: higher reliability, use of low voltage technology in the MW range, higher torque density, changing the number of poles. However, the larger number of phases also implies higher control complexity since the machine is now described in terms of a fundamental voltage dq plane, harmonics dq planes and a zero-sequence vector. Since current harmonics circulate independently, stator voltage harmonics content is critical in multiphase drives and proper attention should be paid to the inverter modulation.

Fault-tolerant operation, a major advantage of the multiphase drives, is inherent. Smooth torque production under a phase fault, however, requires proper computation of the remaining phases current commands. Fault-tolerant operation can be achieved in torque controlled applications, extending the interest in multiphase drives.

This presentation is focused on the nine-phase induction motor drive. The aspects addressed are:

  • modeling of the nine-phase induction motor;
  • torque density increase;
  • changing the number of poles;
  • fault-tolerant operation of multiphase drives;
  • modulation of nine-phase 2-level inverters.



Biography: Braz de Jesus Cardoso Filho


Since 1989, he has been in a faculty position with the Department of Electrical Engineering, School of Engineering, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (Brazil), where he is currently a Professor of electrical engineering. He is the Founder and Head of the TESLA Power Engineering Laboratory (formerly the Industry Application Laboratory), Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. He has authored or coauthored more than 200 technical papers on the topics of power electronics and electrical drives, and holds nine patents and patent applications. His research interests include utility applications of power electronics, renewable energy sources, semiconductor power devices, electrical machines and drives, and vehicle electrification.
