Titel: “Topologies and control methods of Modern PWM Converters for Renewable Energy”



During the last years PWM converters have drastically increased their importance on the market of DC-AC and AC-DC conversion. Two technology breakthroughs of the electronic industry by have enabled this remarkable development:

the introduction of semiconductors on the market enabled the manufacturing of reliable, robust and low cost converter modules,

the introduction of low cost microprocessors (e.g. DSPs) and FPGA for real time applications allowed the successful implementation of complex vector control schemes.

Lately the PWM converters become very important part of an AC-DC-AC line interfacing converters in renewable and distributed energy systems. They are increasingly applied, if a substantial amount of energy should be fed into the grid. Furthermore, it offers characteristics like a low harmonic distortion of the line currents, a regulation of the input power factor, an adjustment and stabilization of the DC-link voltage and depending on the requirements possibly a reduction of the DC filter capacitor size for certain applications.

PWM converters can be more efficient, reliable, cheaper and smart with proper design of converter topology to application and new advanced control and modulation, what is presented in this course.

Mariusz Malinowski (S’99–M’03) received the M.Sc.E.E. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering (with awards) from the Institute of Control and Industrial Electronics, Warsaw University of Technology (WUT), Warsaw, Poland, in 1997 and 2001, respectively.  He is currently with the Institute of Control and Industrial Electronics, WUT. He was a Visiting Scholar at Aalborg University, Denmark, at the University of Nevada, Reno, and at Technical University of Berlin, Germany. He was also Visiting Professor at Universidad Tecnica Federico Santa Marıa, Valparaıso (Chile), University of Cergy-Pontoise (France), ENSEEIHT - Laplace, Toulouse (France) and ETH Zurich (Switzerland).  He is an author of four patents and over 100 technical papers, and coauthor of book chapters in Control in Power Electronics (New York: Academic, 2002), Industrial Electronics Handbook” (Taylor & Francis Group – USA, 2011), and "Selbstgeführte Stromrichter am Gleichspannungszwischenkreis: Funktion, Modulation und Regelung" (Springer Verlag, 2012),. His current research activities include control of PWM rectifiers and active filters, modulation techniques, and DSP applications.

Dr. Malinowski received the Siemens Prize for his Ph.D. dissertation, a WUT President Prize, a Paper Award at the IEEE IECON 2000, and a Polish Minister of Education Award. He is also a Scholar of the Foundation for Polish Science and an Associate Editor of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS and Editor in Chief of Industrial Electronics Magazine.
