1.1.3 What do You Learn and How is it Organized ?

What do You Learn?

You will learn how to make somewhat advanced Internet pages, how to link them in a systematic manner, how to include (self-made or processed) graphics, forms, formulas, and how to work with frames. You will also get an idea of what can be done with JavaScript and JAVA and you may try to use existing modules for some purpose.
You do not learn:
Writing programs in JavaScript
Writing programs in JAVA
For two simple reasons:
Learning either one of those programming languages in any kind of detail would take several semesters if you have no prior programming experience, and at least 1 - 2 Semesters if you have.
None of us knows JavaScript or JAVA well enough to be able to teach it to others.

How do You Learn?

You will learn HTML by doing HTML. The course, while always adjusted to the needs, knowledge base, and preferences of the participants, essentially consists of the modules which form the "chapters" of the table of content. The general way of dealing with a module is
About 1 hour of explaining and demonstrations of the topic.
Practicing the topic for the remainder of the two week time slot allotted to one module.
To have something for practicing, tasks will be assigned to the student groups (consisting of 2 students) which will have to be done and handed in in order to obtain the credit points.
In the beginning, all tasks are normed, short, and rather similar.
Later, tasks may get more involved and center around specific topics. You will have a choice of what you want to work on.
Writing your papers for "Electronic Materials", "Defects", Semiconductor I + II", and possibly "Analytics I + II" in HTML (including illustrations, cross-links, etc.) may be a valid task for the HTML course.

Organization

(See also "Running Term" in the menu)

The course takes place in the PC room of the Technical Faculty.
12 modern PCs are available, fully equipped with the necessary software and with access to the net.
Depending on the number of participants, groups of at most two students per PC may have to be formed.
Assignments and rules for obtaining your creditpoints are adjusted to the needs of the participants and discussed in class.
In any case, if you want creditpoints, you have to hand in your assignments at a specific time to be determined.
The time allowed for practicing in class should be sufficient to do your assignments. However, if you want to do a great job, or do some HTML for yourself:
You may, upon request, be authorized to use the PC room at convenient times
You may borrow the necessary software for your PC at home. Since the software was bought by the "Förderverein" of the Technical Faculty, it is free for members - all others pay DM. 35.- per semester.
