BAföG Information

BAföG - Ersti Hilfe

The documentation for students applying for support under the Student Financial Assistance Programme for the first time are checked for completeness in a quick, non-bureaucratic manner by BAföG Ersti Hilfe so that the application can be processed as quickly as possible after submission:

Guidelines for checking the "usual" course of study by the BAföG officer of the Institute of EE&IT

BAföG Officer:
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Höft

Stellvertretender BAföG Beauftragter:
Prof. Dr. Hermann Kohlstedt

Fixed ECTS threshold

If a student has obtained

  • at least 40 ECTS credits after the third semester,
  • at least 60 ECTS credits after the fourth semester,
  • at least 80 ECTS credits after the fifth semester

then it can be assumed without further examination that the student's course of study is within usual parameters.

Individual checks

If a student has not achieved the thresholds above, the BAföG Officer makes an individual assessment at technical level of whether the course of study can still be certified as "usual".
The student is asked to state in writing that he or she is following his or her degree programme in a goal-oriented manner. This statement can be supplemented, for example, by certificates of completed exercises, offered in some basic subjects like Mathematics, Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering, and so on. The student should also present the reports from Laboratory Basics I. In particular, proofs of voluntary efforts (e.g. completed exercises) should be attached.

The BAföG Officer will also check the structured sequence of the degree programme on the basis of a Transcript of Examinations provided by the Examination Office. This may be carried out based on the following criteria, for example:

  • Are there regular registrations for module examinations and have the examinations also been taken?
  • Has a large part of the basic subjects such as electrical engineering, maths, physics, computer science, etc. been completed?
  • What is the range of grades within the subjects passed?

If necessary, the BAföG Officer may request a discussion with the student to clarify the overall situation.

Based on the number of ECTS credits achieved and the individual assessment of the study situation above, in case of moderate shortfalls below the ECTS threshold but convincingly presented study planning and execution a "usual" course of study can still be certified. In other cases, this will not be certified. The student may then be advised to request deferment of the credit examination from the BAföG office and if necessary to submit justification to the BAföG office pursuant to Section 15.3.
